Biography

I'm Kat Jungnickel. I'm part of INCITE (Incubator for critical inquiry into technology and ethnography) in the Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey. INCITE is a creative interdisciplinary research lab interested in research projects which explore the socio-cultural dimensions of technology use and design. It is made up of PhD students, research fellows and visiting scholars working on projects about online music, photoblogging, cyber cafes, digital cameras, online education and more.

This bus blog came about in June 2003. It started during a short term research fellowship and since then has morphed around the edges of technology use, mobile place, urban space and design. It looks at the relationship between technology use and senses of place in urban settings and it's pretty much an experiment in innovating methodologically through technology (by way of a research website and blog).

The project was only meant to be three months long, but I discovered a penchant for blogging and a fondness for the bus..... I am now doing my PhD in these same areas of interest (but it won't be situated on the No. 73).

The bus project is part of a larger research project originally conceived by Dr Nina Wakeford (INCITE) for a collaboration with Intel Research Council called - Urban Mobilities; Locating Consumption of Ubiquitous Content. It looks at the relationship between mobility and experience of place, with particular reference to the use of digital content.

This bus blog links two other parts of the project.

- 73 stories - a blog that gathers 73 word stories about the No.73 bus (please feel free to add one)

- 73urbanjourneys.com - a website which builds upon other aspects of my ethnographic study.
